The new $2 million Macleay Islands Arts Complex Inc (MIAC) is now finally open. Its original opening was derailed by a visit from Cyclone Alfred, making the delayed June 7 event even more meaningful. It certainly didn’t disappointed. It was an invited guest list of about 200 people that got to see the exciting new arts complex in all its opening glory. With new island art work hanging and standing throughout, it highlighted its perhaps greatest achievement: a brilliant new island venue. The two galleries of art are definitely spectacular, as is the adjoining pottery section and work and lecture areas. The convening area between the two constructed areas is its ‘secret weapon’ Along with the shop, cafe and bar area, the islands now have a wonderful and very new place to meet and greet for artists and lovers of art..The opening of the gallery itself was conducted by co-president Christopher Gilbert.MC for the event was the other co-president, Catherine Marsh .It was no surprise that co-president Christopher Gilbert was overcome with emotion at this final achievement. He paid tribute to ‘all the MIAC volunteers who made the new gallery ‘happen’.“This was definitely not a one-man band.“Thank you to Catherine and all the many volunteers.”Co-president Catherine Marsh thanked all the sponsors involved and mentioned that it was a ‘unanimous decision’ by MIAC to name one of the galleries The Christopher Gilbert Gallery.“It was well deserved,” she added. The brilliant opening night was a fitting climax to a wonderful island outcome!
