Some of our Young at Heart group went off to Paradise Point recently and enjoyed an escorted bike ride along the waterfront. The Young at Heart activities have started on our islands and activities are organized by Debra Batik, a long-time Bay Islands Community Services volunteer and carer. The nonprofit organization, which is springing up all over the world, is set up with volunteers to take those who are elderly or disabled on a bike ride. The organization was started by two North Queensland men on a mission to ensure ‘everyone’ can feel Young at Heart. That organization is now spreading around the world and is about providing a new outlet and outings for the aged. That is what led to the Paradise Point outing, and the bikes that allowed the activity to take place. These come from Cycling Without Age, which provides bike rides to the elderly and people with disabilities using special adaptive bikes called trishaws, manned by volunteer pilots. There is no cost if you would like to book. Contact Bay Island Community Services or cyclingwithoutage.com.au.
