There’s a lot more happening at the Russell Island RSL than meets the eye. Behind the bar, behind the events and behind the commemorative services is a dedicated team of local volunteers working hard to support veterans and bring the island community together.
With seven veterans on the current committee, the RSL’s focus is firmly on honouring those who have served, providing welfare support and creating a welcoming place for members and the wider community.
Secretary Guy LeRoy says his time on the committee has been rewarding, thanks to the friendships he’s made and a shared commitment to veterans. Like all committee members, Guy contributes substantial volunteer hours to keep things moving, with some committee members putting in excess of 50 hours a week to support the RSL and its activities.
Entertainment is also a big part of the RSL’s plans, with tribute shows, live music and comedy bringing more reasons for islanders to get together. Upcoming attractions include Sea Gems, an Olivia Newton-John tribute and Bourbon Street in December. New Year’s Eve is set to feature Chicken Liquor with a full band and stage light show, while Battle of the Bands is among the ideas being explored to give local musicians a chance to shine. Ticket prices are expected to range from $5 to $20, depending on the production.
Beyond the entertainment, the RSL provides important practical support, including hospital visits, companionship and assistance for veterans and their families. The sub-branch has 94 veteran members living on the island and welcomes others who may be looking for support or connection.
The club also hosts a free veterans’ lunch at noon on the first Wednesday of each month, with bookings required. Remembrance Day on 11th November will include the renaming of the Hub, with Hon. Rebecca Young MP expected to attend. On 29th November, the sub-branch will remember the 645 personnel lost aboard HMAS Sydney II in 1941.
From remembering our service personnel to creating new opportunities for local entertainment, the Russell Island RSL is working to build a future that benefits veterans and the whole community.
So next time there’s a show on, a lunch to attend or a commemorative service on the calendar, consider getting involved. Every visit helps support a local organisation whose heart is in looking after others.
