20 roads across Macleay Island will be upgraded under Redland City Council’s Green Seal Program

More than 20 roads across Macleay Island will be upgraded under Redland City Council’s Green Seal Program for 2025–2026.

The works will see gravel pavement and a two-coat bitumen seal applied, improving road conditions for local residents. A council spokesperson said the project would bring the island close to completion.

“At the end of this stage, Council will have sealed about 98 per cent of the Macleay Island roads scheduled for upgrades under the Green Seal Program,” the spokesperson said. “This is a significant milestone in improving community infrastructure across the Southern Moreton Bay Islands.”

The program, which has been running since 2014, aims to reduce maintenance needs on unsealed roads, particularly after heavy rain. In this round, 22 roads are scheduled for upgrades, fully funded through Council’s 2025–2026 Budget. Works are expected to finish by June 2026, weather permitting.

Division 5 Councillor Shane Rendalls said the program had already changed the way islanders travel.

“Since 2014, about 74 per cent of SMBI roads have been upgraded, and $4 million has been committed in the latest budget,” he said. “It’s great to see Macleay Island works coming to fruition.”

Roads scheduled for upgrades include:

Swallow Road, Florence Street, Wake Street, Lakeside Avenue, Matthew Street, Rainbow Avenue, Granadilla Street, Mawson Street, Hastings Terrace, Southsea Terrace, Cliff Terrace, High Central Road, Derwent Street, Dove Street, View Outlook, Hilda Crescent, Walnut Court, Lake Street, Quail Place, Kestrel Street, Kunara Street and Garnet Street.
