MEDICARE MENTAL HEALTH CENTRE

PIKE WELCOMES OPENING OF THE REDLANDS MEDICARE MENTAL HEALTH CENTRE

Federal Member for Bowman, Henry Pike MP, has warmly welcomed the opening of a new mental health centre in Cleveland as a significant step forward for the health of the Redlands community.

This week, the Redlands Medicare Mental Health Centre opened at 40 Middle Street, Cleveland.

The Centre will be staffed by dedicated mental health professionals and individuals with lived experience of mental health challenges to help address the mental health crisis.

Mr Pike said that this important opening is a milestone for mental health in the Redlands.

‘It’s fantastic to finally see this great centre operating and serving our community, ensuring every Redlander can access the support they need to address their mental health needs,’ he said.

‘Mental health is a battle that many Redlanders contend with every single day.

“An estimated 430 people in our community attempt suicide every year. That number is way too high- those are our family, our mates and our neighbours.’

‘This incredible new facility will offer free, immediate and accessible mental health support to anyone who is in crisis or in need. No Medicare cards or GP referrals are required.’

Mr Pike said it is a relief to finally have the Centre open and ready to serve Redlanders, as the Centre’s completion once had an uncertain future.

‘After the previous Coalition government committed to fund this facility through a $3.4 million commitment, a change of government threatened to consign this facility to never go ahead.’

‘Over the past two and a half years, I’ve worked hard through community advocacy and plenty of emails and phone calls to ensure the government honour this commitment.’

‘I couldn’t have done it without our dedicated community who have fought hard for this mental health centre alongside me.

“It’s wonderful to see the Redlands finally get the facility it deserves.’

Mr Pike described the facility as a game-changer for mental health support in the Redlands.

‘I would encourage all Redlanders who are struggling to be brave and reach out to the team. The first step towards getting support is often the hardest, but it’s the most important decision someone can make.’
