EDITORIAL  JANUARY 2025

2025 COULD BE A YEAR OF UNCERTAINTY AND CRISIS FOR REDLAND CITY COUNCIL

At this time each year, our January edition, we look to the year ahead.

And, we like to be as positive as possible, looking for the ‘pluses’, not the ‘minuses’.

Apart from the height of the Covid pandemic when everything shut down, 2025 is showing some signs of some concerns ahead.

It would be fair to say that Redland City Council is in crisis..

What readers will not know is that our council is currently operating ‘leaderless’ on various levels.

Ratepayers would be concerned to know that our newly minted Mayor ,Jos Mitchell, has literally gone missing.

There is also no General Manager in place.

Our sources tell us that the Mayor has hardly been sighted at Council and council events since her election.

We have been reliably informed that Mayor Mitchell has not been seen at council in a meaningful way for more than two months.

We know she is associated with former Redlands MP Km Richards and has ‘popped up’ with Kim on a couple of occasions; but not so much at council.

Most meetings have been conducted rather well by Deputy Mayor, Julie Talty.

If you put yourself forward for such a prominent position, you have to be able to handle the rough and tumble of council politics.

It is not always a comfortable ride; but THAT IS THE JOB!

Clearly Jos Mitchell needs some help. We sincerely hope she seeks it.

The council also currently has no General Manager, and the search is on.

We hope a candidate comes forward who has some ‘real life’ and business experience and not just a ‘bureaucrat’.

What response council will receive in this regard is not known, given the current general uncertainty.

On a positive for council, we know Deputy Mayor Julie Talty is doing a great job and she has tremendous experience in the role.

The other area of council we will mention are the team of receptionists who answer the phones when you ring council. They are extremely efficient and nearly always get a result!

We can look to some success with new State MP’s for Redlands and Oodgeroo, Rebecca Young and Amanda Stoker, picking up vital assistant ministerial roles in the new Crisafulli Queensland Government.

Rebecca Young is the Assistant Minister to the Deputy Premier and Assistant Minister for Planning, Housing and Better Regulation.

Amanda Stoker is Assistant Minister for Finance, Trade, Employment and Training.

These links are close to the ‘main game’ in Queensland politics and is extremely important for our islands.

The other matter to mention for 2025 is the forthcoming Federal Election expected to be held possibly on May 17.

This is crucial to Australia’s future and we can look to the recent Queensland State election and the November US election to offer an indication of what may happen.

We shall watch with interest.

Absolute propaganda . This publication is aligned to the extreme right of politics. They need to be unbiased and informative which they aren’t. Also who writes the editorial? This person is also misinformed and right wing bias. Please change this role to someone less bias.
