HOLIDAYS ARE IN FULL SWING!
2018 is here and we are well into the summer holiday season on Straddie. Like other businesses associated with the tourism sector, the Christmas/New Year’s period on the Island sees our work load ramp up as we help our guests to wind down. Our team at Straddie Sales and Rentals are in full swing welcoming guests to our little slice of paradise and ensuring their stay is an enjoyable and memorable experience. Mother nature has delivered some spectacular weather, ideal for swimming, surfing and other water sports or to just laze around in a shady spot with a good book.
ALL SET FOR GAMES BATON RELAY STRADDIE
As outlined in the previous issue of the Friendly Bay Islander, the Queens Baton Relay for the 2018 Commonwealth Games is making its way to North Stradbroke Island. A host of special guests including Queensland Firebird Jemma Mi Mi, surfing champion Bede Durbidge and Commonwealth Games medal designer Delvene Cockatoo-Collins will help give the Queen’s Baton a traditional Redlands welcome at North Stradbroke Island’s Headland Park on Monday, January 8. The visit to the stunning Point Lookout park will be the first of two to the city for the Queen’s Baton as it makes its way to the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said: ”It is particularly exciting that the Baton will visit Straddie, home of Quandamooka artist Delvene Cockatoo-Collins, whose wonderful coast-inspired designs have been selected for the Commonwealth Games medal. We are also fortunate to have two other Redland stars at the event – surfing champ and Straddie local Bede Durbidge and our own Queensland Firebird Jemma Mi Mi.” The Queen’s Baton will be carried by Aunty Rosie Borey, a Quandamooka Traditional Owner and respected Elder to Headland Park for a traditional welcome with a smoking ceremony and a great afternoon of entertainment and activities. There will be free shuttle buses from Straddie’s passenger ferry and water taxi to get you to Point Lookout. Division 2 Councillor Peter Mitchell said the North Stradbroke Island event, from 2pm-4pm, would be hosted by Channel 7 Sunrise personality Mark Beretta. “It will include live music, cultural demonstrations and performances by the acclaimed Quandamooka Yulu-Burri-Ba dancers,” Cr Mitchell said.

COFFEE WITH A COP, DUNWICH STYLE
In early December, Bayside District Crime Prevention (DCPC) and the Dunwich Police teamed up at the latest Coffee with a Cop. Skips on Straddie hosted the event providing pure coffee indulgence to get the day started. With the smell of coffee in the air the community turned up in numbers to meet local police and more importantly the hard-working members from Crime Stoppers and the Volunteers in Policing. The whole morning had a friendly feel to it and a massive thank you must go out to our local police members, Skips, the VIPs, Crime Stoppers and the Bayside District DCPC mob for making this event such a success.

NORTH STRADBROKE ISLAND ECONOMIC TRANSITION STRATEGY
The Quandamooka whale watching permit is the first of the North Stradbroke Island’s Economic Transition Strategy’s 23 projects to reach completion. Program delivery is on track for 14 other projects: An exclusive whale watching permit was granted to the Quandamooka people with the aim of increasing Indigenous tourism, related business opportunities and to complement other whale-related tourism ventures on North Stradbroke Island. Granting of the permit is a milestone marking completion of the first project under the North Stradbroke Island Economic Transition Strategy. It gives Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation (QYAC) the opportunity to establish a whale watching venture that will be enhanced by their knowledge and cultural connection to whales and North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah)'s natural environment. Once started, the venture is expected to increase tourism to the island and create opportunities for supporting business. This initiative provides long-term sustainable employment opportunities for Quandamooka people. It also complements development of a world-class whale interpretive facility at Point Lookout—another North Stradbroke Island Economic Transition Strategy project.
